Frequently asked questions
Do I need a SmackLip subscription to buy a report?
No. Reports are a one-time purchase. The Restaurant Dashboard subscription (continuous data, real-time rubric alerts, the Offer Composer, Toast/Square integration) is a separate product. Most operators buy a Quarterly first, then convert to subscription within 30 days using a discount code included in the report.
How do you verify I own the restaurant?
Three methods. Fastest: an email at your restaurant's official domain (e.g., name@yourrestaurant.com). Backup: phone verification at your restaurant's listed number. Slowest: manual review by a SmackLip team member (1 business day). For the first 25 orders during launch, we manual-review every order regardless of method, which protects against competitor-as-owner attempts.
What does the report actually contain?
For per-restaurant reports: menu performance scorecard, rubric flag analysis (the operational lever, what's drifting, where), audience composition vs regional benchmarks, menu × audience fit gap, repeat-rater loyalty, day-of-week patterns, comparative competitive context, 5–7 prioritized strategic recommendations, and a preview of what you'd unlock with POS integration. Market Benchmark variant focuses on anonymized peer positioning.
What if my mean rating is below 4.0? Will the report still be useful?
Especially then. The rubric flag analysis identifies the specific operational drifts driving the rating, Salt: under, Doneness: drift, Char: light, etc., and pairs each with recommendations. A 4.0-rated restaurant typically has 2–4 high-leverage fixes that lift the mean toward 4.4 within 30–60 days. The report tells you exactly which fixes to start with.
Can a competitor buy a report on my restaurant?
No. Ownership verification applies on every order. A buyer who cannot prove ownership of a restaurant cannot receive that restaurant's per-restaurant report. The Market Benchmark variant, which compares 5–6 restaurants in a peer set, does include other restaurants, but ALL peers are anonymized as Restaurant A/B/C/D/E and shown only at public-facing aggregate level (mean rating, distribution, audience composition). No per-dish data, no rubric flag detail, no individual rater info is ever shown for peer restaurants.
How is the data sourced?
Every SmackLip Tongue Rating combines a 1.0–5.0 numeric score with structured rubric responses across taste axes (Salt, Acid, Heat, Doneness, Char, etc.). Diners rate dishes via the SmackLip app; the calibrated rubric is the differentiator vs free-text review platforms. Active accounts only; bot-detected and moderated-out ratings excluded.
What if my POS is not connected? Does that change the report?
The rating-side analysis is fully usable without POS. What you don't get without POS connection: actual revenue per dish, margin per dish, the Stars/Puzzles/Plowhorses/Dogs menu engineering matrix, and Smart Purchasing recommendations. Those panels are previewed in the report as "What you'd unlock with POS integration" and activate the day you connect Toast or Square via subscription.
Refund policy?
If the report cannot be generated for your restaurant, typically because we don't have enough rating volume in your selected period, full refund. If you're unhappy with the report itself, we'll engage with feedback and can offer a partial credit toward a Restaurant Dashboard subscription. Refunds are not offered after delivery for change-of-mind reasons.
